RARE ELZAC 1940s Large WOOD + LUCITE Exotic Face BROOCH
Divine Design ~ Quality Craftsmanship! … Founded in 1941, Elzac was best known for its wonderfully imaginative novelty jewelry. Headquartered in Los Angeles, it used natural materials, such as ceramic, lucite, feathers, and wood, during a period when more conventional jewelry resources were in short supply. All pieces were handmade, and the company achieved great success and popularity, until it ceased operations in 1947. Today, Elzac works are highly sought-after collectibles. This exceptionally rare and elegant Elzac brooch elevates novelty jewelry to the rarified realm of true art. With a decidedly modernist flair in the manner of Modigliani, it depicts a highly stylized and elongated face of an exotic figure. The face is composed of polished ebony and has been superbly hand-carved, as well as detailed with silver stud eyes, a delicate, twisted silver wire ornament decorating its forehead, and silver studs accenting the neck. It is encircled by a fabulously imposing, “feathered” headdress carved and cut in clear lucite, which cascades down one side of the face and gracefully wraps itself around the neck of the figure. Singularly sensational, this is a prized addition to any Elzac collection, as well as a show-stopping piece of wearable art.

MARKS/LABEL: None. Virtually all Elzac pieces are unsigned. They were manufactured only with paper tags or labels, and it is very rare to find one today which is still intact. DIMENSIONS: 3-1/2” x 1-3/4”. CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition, definitely collector quality. There is only some paint loss on the back of the pin, where black paint was applied to conceal the glue mount. The pinback is fitted with a secure rollover-locking clasp that has been injected into the lucite.
