From the hallmark of Moctezuma …
This outstanding, sterling silver bracelet was handwrought by a most interesting and, some say, notorious Taxco silversmith, Serafin Moctezuma. He was a contemporary of William Spratling, as well as the maestro’s nemesis. Convinced Moctezuma was pirating his designs and mimicking his hallmark, Spratling filed a federal complaint. Yet despite Moctezuma’a questionable reputation, it cannot be denied that he was a highly skilled silver maker—and this remarkable bracelet proves it. It is composed of six deeply convex, rectilinear panels interlinked by foldover silver connectors. The panels boast a classic Taxco design—not unlike some produced by Spratling—consisting of meticulous cutwork, piercing, and flat chasing. Each panel’s deep incising displays both linear and curvilinear patterns, whose detail and dimension are enhanced by heavy oxidizing. Splendidly refined and masterful, this is a distinctive jewelry piece, as well as a singular collectible from one of the noted artisans of Mexico’s silver renaissance. HALLMARKS: HECHO EN MEXICO, 925 {circle}; SM {conjoined, inside circle}; Eagle assay stamp #3 for Taxco {silhouetted}. DIMENSIONS: 7-1/4” wearable length x 3/4” wide. WEIGHT: 27.6 grams. CONDITION: Most likely dating from the 1950’s, the bracelet is in excellent vintage condition. It closes with a fully functioning push button v-spring and box clasp. Book References: There is a discussion of Serafin Moctezuma, accompanied by photos of his work and hallmark, in Chapter III, “William Spratling Las Delicias,” in Morrill and Berk’s Mexican Silver, 3rd Edition. Moctezuma is also featured in Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks, as well as cited in Romero’s Warman’s Jewelry. |
