VINTAGE Peruvian LAFFI ERA Anthropomorphic SILVER PIN
Pre-Columbian motif ~ Modernist Laffi style … The ancient, pre-Inca, Peruvian culture known as Nasca believed in a host of mythical creatures who possessed great spiritual powers. The most frequently portrayed in Nasca art was an anthropomorphic being, which displayed many manifestations. The half-beast, half-man figural on this spectacular pin represents one such creature. Handwrought in .925 silver, the figure—comprised of the fangs and spiked body of a fearsome animal, but with a human arm and leg—boasts the same meticulous cutwork and minimalist incising characteristic of the works by designer Graziella Laffi. It has been surmounted to a free form and concave silver plaque, which has been hand-hammered and deeply patinated. This plaque imbues the piece with a splendid texture and dimension, its scorched ground contrasting boldly with the polished, silver figure. Most likely dating to the 1950’s, this is an outstanding jewelry piece, as well as a distinctive collectible for aficionados of pre-Columbian culture and Peruvian silver.

HALLMARKS: PERU; 925; FS. DIMENSIONS: 2” x 1-1/4”. WEIGHT: 12.7 grams. CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition, definitely collector quality, including a secure rollover-locking clasp.
