This is a fantastic Victorian era telescoping mechanical pencil. It is made in two parts. The outer barrel, or case, is made of gold-filled brass with an ebonized enamel finish. The barrel is studded with turquoise glass beads and has a photo of a military officer embedded in it. It has a top ring for attaching the pencil to a chain or chatelaine.
The pencil is a telescoping type, with a gold-filled tip and a silver metal body. The top has a larger turquoise glass bead. It operates by pulling the top end to extend the pencil in both directions for use.
The pencil measures about 4 1/2 inches when extended and about 2 3/8 inches when closed. Excellent condition.
