Fine antique lap desk with sewing items, in coromandel wood veneer, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, abalone and brass. Hinged top and fold out lower section with a fitted interior of ebonized wood with the original tooled velvet writing slope, compartments for pens, inkwells with silver lids, sewing implements and thimbles (not included), thread/twine holders of mother-of-pearl and bone, a sleeve in the lid to store stationery and two additional divided compartments. Circa 1860.
Measures about 10 3/8 x 9 inches, 4 1/2 inches deep, and 14 1/2 inches when open. Deficiencies (all shown in photos): The lower hinged lid is separated (but fully intact), missing one small corner of the ebonized veneer and the latch for the lower lid. Otherwise this is elaborate and beautiful.
