This is a beautiful lidded and divided tobacco or betel nut box made of bronze (or silver) that is decorated with repousse work and chiseled designs. The sides and lid have been covered with gold leaf and copper overlay. The very top decoration is an attached floral decoration that is at least 14k gold and held in place by a wire under the lid. Inside, the box is separated into two compartments by a divider. The piece contains no marks or inscription.
There is a label inside that states this is a tobacco box from Sumatra. Measures about 4 x 2 x 1.5 inches (10 x 5 x 3.5 cm). Condition is quite good. The gold leaf is mostly intact, the copper overlay has missing areas, but the top gold piece is fully intact. Gorgeous. |
