This is a Hawaiian Koa Wood Inkwell from Island Curio Company ca1915. The koa wood has gorgeous multicolor graining.
The glass inkwell has a black Bakelite lid. The well is marked on the bottom: GEM No52 Nov 5, 1912 (which is backwards!) and another hard to read marking. These marks look to be repeated on the underside of the Bakelite lid: Pat. Nov. 5, 1912 / The GEM / C&D Mfg. Co., N.Y. U.S.A. The glass has a stop in the well that allows the lid to turn just far enough to expose the pen dip slot. The koa wood inkwell base has two pen rests and a Hawaiian Coat of Arms decal. Excellent condition throughout. Measures about 6 7/8 inches by 5 3/4 inches on the base. |
