Late 1890s pin depicting two men’s hands in some kind of secret handshake. Below the hands there is the name of a company: Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark, N.J.
The pin is made from a print that is covered in celluloid and attached to a copper back. The back is marked: The Whitehead & Hoag / Newark, N.J. / Pat Oct.18.92 / Mar.7.93. There are two pins on the back. The upper pin is used to attach the pin to the wearer. The bottom pin, which does not have a sharp point, would be used to attach a ribbon, badge or nametag. This pin is unusual and in great condition. I do not know the symbolism of the handshake. It could be a Freemason secret handshake, a Union solidarity symbol, or a Socialist handshake. It seems that Whitehead & Hoag used the image on a lot of fraternal organization badges. Measures about 2 7/8" x 1 1/2". |
