This exceptional painting on ivory of the Empress Josephine is signed CATULLE. It resides under glass in its original period frame which measures 5.8 by 7.6 in (14.7 by 19.3 cm) and the portion of the painting which is visible measures 3.1 in in diameter (7.9 cm).

This engraved print is entitled LES THERMES DE DIOCLETIEN A ROME (at top), VUE PERSPECTIVE … RESTAURATION (at bottom). It depicts the Baths of Diocletian (Thermae Diocletiani) which were the grandest of the Roman public baths. Lower right reads A. GUILLAUMOT PERE SC. Below "VUE…" it reads "Imp. Ch. Included here are two antique, framed aquatint engravings by Charles Hunt depicting sporting scenes after the oil paintings by John Sturgess (1864-1903). The first is entitled Queen's Huntings...Shewing the Way, and the other is entitled Queen's Huntings...Not This Time. Each carries the marks of the engraver and publisher as follows: "ENGRAVED BY CHARLES HUNT & SON" and "LONDON PUBLISHED FEB. 27TH 1875 BY G.P. MCQUEEN". Frames measure 26.5" by 32.5" and the plates measure 18" by 23".

This item comes from the collection of Roni Steinberg Sokoloff and resided in her former 63-acre estate in Bedford New York known as Cantitoe Farms. (The estate is down the road from Martha Stewart's home by the same name.) Ms. Sokoloff purchased the piece from a Manhattan dealer in the early 1980s.
