Douglas Pinder Orientalist Arabic Landscape Watercolor
This fine watercolor by Douglas Pinder (British, 1886-1949), depicts two Bedouins on camel with a village with mosque in the background. It resides under matte in a glazed frame which appears to date from the period of the painting. We have not removed the painting for inspection and photography, and are selling the work as-is. Condition is very good. There are no obvious signs of foxing or moisture damage, the surface is clean and the colors are vibrant. Frame measures 22 by 16 in (41.1 by 55.9 cm), and the visible portion of the painting measures 15.7 by 9.7 in (39.9 by 24.6 cm). Douglas Houzen Pinder (1886-1949) was born in Lincoln and grew up in Newquay on the northern coast of Cornwall, England. He is known for his oil and watercolor landscapes of coastal scenes, villages and Orientalist subjects as well. With the help of a sponsor, he traveled to Egypt and painted scenes near Port Sa’id. He is said to have lived in Horrabridge on Dartmoor, and eventually returned to live in Newquay in 1930 where he operated his own gallery, apparently until his death in 1949.
