This faience ceramic chanticleer rooster figurine was designed by Carl Walter (1883-1955) for Stonelain Pottery, made by Associated American Artists of New York. It dates from circa 1940 and is in excellent condition. It measures 11" tall, 7.25" wide and 4.25" deep. The small loss at the edge of the base dates from the time of firing. There are no subsequent losses or repairs visible. It is unsigned. Walters was one of Stonelain's most important artists. His works are held in the permanent collections of a number of important institutions, including the Whitney Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, and Minneapolis institute of Arts, among others.
