This is an original whiteware, undecorated porcelain figurine by Fritz Klimsch (1870-1960) from the German firm of Rosenthal. Measures 16" high by 8" across (20.3 by 40.6 cm). Signed " F. Klimsch ". Weighs an estimated 7-8 lbs. (3.2-3.6 kg). Carries the stamped Rosenthal hallmark on the underside. Age is unknown. In 1894 at the age of 24, Klimsch received the Grand State Prize of the Royal Academy of the Arts. He was appointed Professor in the College of Fine Arts in Berlin Charlottenburg, a position he held until 1934. In the 1930s the Rosenthal firm featured many of his works, including this figurine, which is entitled " Hockende ". It was originally offered in a limited edition, but due to its immense popularity it came out in several later editions. Rosenthal was based from 1879 in Selb, Bavaria and produced some of the finest porcelain in existence. |
