This exceptional miniature painting is signed "J Brandl" and may be a work by the important Bohemian painter, Petr Johannes Brandl (1668-1739) or a follower of the artist. Also known as Peter Johannes Brandl or Jan Petr Brandl, he was a famous portraitist in his day. He was born and worked in Prague in the former kingdom of Bohemia or modern day Czech Republic. Depicted here is a lovely woman of great importance, dressed in a white dress with royal blue and gold sash and wearing a gold tiara decorated with pearls, emeralds, and other gems. The work rests under glass in an old and likely original bronze or brass frame, set within a later modern frame. Outer frame measures 10" high, 9.25" wide, 1" deep and weighs 13 ounces. Oval bronze/brass frame measures 3 3/4" high and 2 7/8" at its widest point.
