This is a lovely copy of Le leçon de tricot (known also as Special Moment and Knitting Lesson), after Emile Munier (1840-1895). Signed E. MUNIER in lower right corner. Canvas measures 19 1/8" by 25 1/4" and frame measures 24.75" by 30.75" by 3". Convas condition and nail heads suggest this painting dates from the early twentieth century. Giltwood and gesso frame is old and likely from the period of the painting. Canvas is in good condition. Painting craquelure is consistent with age. There are a couple very small craquelure losses less than 1/8" across near the pocket of the boy's right leg. There are no identifying marks on the rear. This painting was purchased in the 1980s by Roni Steinberg Sokoloff and resided in the home on her former 63 acre estate in Bedford New York, known as Cantitoe Farms. (This estate is down the road from Martha Stewart's estate of the same name.) The painting is being sold exclusively here on behalf of Ms. Sokoloff.
