This unique side table by Fontana Arte dates from the 1950s and features four cascading clear glass surfaces shaped in wedges which extend from a center pole measuring 47" tall. Top glass surface measures 23.75" high and each of the glass surfaces is 18" long. The entire table measures approximately 20" wide by 20" deep and the frame is made from solid brass. There are no visible cracks or chips. There are no hallmarks. Founded by Gio Ponti, Fontana Arte produced works by the most influential Italian designers of the mid-century period, including Pietro Chiesa, Gae Aulenti, Pierluigi Cerri, Piero Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Vittorio Gregotti, Ettore Sottsass, Umberto Riva, Alvaro Siza and Renzo Piano. This table is similar to designs by Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa. It is also very similar to the petite side table by Fontana Arte which featured a single wedge-shaped glass surface. We have seen that smaller table come up at auction a few times in the past ten years, but we have never seen our table appear at major auction nor be offered online in any of the major marketplaces including eBay. This item resides in our client's gallery in lower Manhattan (New York City) and may be seen in person by appointment.
