| This framed oil on canvas by Sidney H. Riesenberg (1885-1971) is signed and dated 1958. It depicts seagulls in flight headed toward "Motif 1 ", the famous red lobster shack at water's edge in the harbor at Rockport Massachusetts. Canvas measures 30" by 30" and the period frame measures 35" by 35". Canvas is relatively clean and in excellent condition. This work resides in our client's gallery in Westchester County NY and may be seen in person by appointment. Riesenberg is best known as one of our most important commercial illustrators who created memorable art for the Marines and Liberty Loan campaigns which raised funds for WWI. He studied at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and moved to Yonkers NY thereafter. Living and working in New York, he contributed numerous illustrations for Harper's, Scribner's, Collier's and the Saturday Evening Post. However, he was also an accomplished painter who exhibited extensively throughout the 1930s and 1940s at the National Academy of Design, the New York Watercolor Club, the Allied Artists of America, Yonkers Art Association, and the Rockport Art Association. He work shows the influence of Impressionism and plein-air painting. His attention to structure and design is clearly seen in this work, where he has replicated the angled lines of the birds' wings to draw our attention to sections of the sky and building in the background. | |||||||||
