|This extraordinary pair of marble torcheres have been attributed to E.F. Caldwell and date from circa 1900-1910. Each measures 72" H X 20" W X 20" D (183.0 H X 50.8 W X 50.8 D cm), and are shown here with 5" diameter candles in place. They feature extraordinary carved decoration in high relief. The cornice has an egg and dart motif at the edge and acanthus leaves scrolling on four sides. The upright portion beneath the cornice features a diaper motif, scrolling acanthus leaves and swans. The lower half features female masks, a ring of lozenges with water fowl above foliate decoration. The hexagonal shaped architectural base has Greek urn and foliate designs and rests upon heavy animal claw feet. Condition of each is very good. There are minor losses and restorations, but no major repairs. An identical torchiere can be found in the Edward F. Caldwell online archives of the Smithsonian Libraries in photo C016549.|
