This stand, a Kekkai, is used as a barrier to separate one area from another. Examples, as given in the website "Wiktionary", are: in Buddhism to restrict access to various areas, in the tea ceremony to separate tatami areas and in a merchant's shop to be the barrier between the register and the bookkeeping area. The stand is made from repurposed wood, possibly an old shop sign or from a water wheel with the frame and feet constructed of bamboo. The bamboo is split on the top back rung. The wood is rough and jagged from years of use.
