Giant Hyotan (Gourd) with Kabuki Face

This hyotan has a noh or kabuki face on the outside and a nice storage cavern inside. It's wonderfully sound in spite of its age. It's an arresting piece with the jaunty stem on top and humorous face on the front. The storage area is clean and usable.
If gourds bring luck, as Japanese tradition holds, then this one ought to be a serendipity windfall! Smaller gourds are generally vessels for sake or oil, and larger ones stored seeds and other goods.
Dates from Taisho period.
