Chokwaro, a mountain genie or Sennin was a character who possesed a magic gourd, out of which a horse would emerge. He could fold the horse and put it back in the gourd when he didn't need it. Today, the proverb about a horse from a gourd "Hyotan Kara Koma" refers to unexpected events or things that one mentions that aren't really expected to happen, but somehow do. This carving is from a single piece of wood with polychrome paint or lacquer. There's a nailhead visible but there's no obvious crack or split that it appears to mend, just some surface irregularity. It's very sound and likely dates from the Showa period. Dimensions: Height: 14" Width: 8-1/2" Depth: 13" |
