Fireman's Headgear, Protective Hat in Heavy Indigo

This heavy hat would have been soaked with water before use. The upper part is padded and a face cover hangs just below the little visor. A lined capelet hangs from the padded cap and wraps over the face cloth from both sides so that three layers cover the face to filter smoke and protect from the heat. The lining of the face-piece has a fabulous print of smoke and flames while the rest of the capelet has a geometric pattern. This is a unique example of the artistry inherent in practical items during the Meiji period into the early 20th century.
Dimensions:
Length: 16"
Width, spread open: 27"Width at bottom of cap: 11"
