Unusual carving is the draw on this chabitsu or tea chest used to store cups for the sencha tea ceremony. The top and bottom of the piece have a cubist style pattern and the sides are textured by more traditional gouging. This little tea box has been well-used. The inside of the top flips to form a tray that shows watermarks, stains, and a tight crack in one edge. The crack is nearly invisible from the outside; see red arrows in photographs. The inside of the box is clean and smooth, and the underside again shows wear. It's hard to date this piece so we'll say it's Showa or earlier. The cubist style lid could have been an early example of Western design influence or it could have been done more recently. It any case it's a great example of functional art. Dimensions: Height: 4-1/2" Diameter: 12-1/2" Please add $16.00 for insured economy shipping in the continental U.S. |
