This fine cha-bitsu or tea ceremony box has deeply-carved chrysanthemums on the kamakura-style cover. The sides of the box and in a different style lacquer; a woven texture (as cloth) is visible in the fininsh. The bottom has black lacquer in a comb-textured finish while the interior is smooth. The lid inverts for use as a tray. Noticed on close inspection are some small chips on the box bottom and the box rim as well as a dent or two on the box's interior floor. The box dates from the Taisho or early Showa period and is a very attractive piece.
