Section from a handscroll showing the deity of wealth Daikoku riding an ox in a procession, in which his retainers, rats dressed as samurai, are carrying his belongings. Perhaps a parody of the sankin kotai (yearly trek to or from the capital). Daikoku is sitting on his rice bales, strapped onto an ox, holding his fan, his treasure bag behind him. All through the painting are symbols of Daikoku and of wealth. Black ink, mineral colors, gofun and gold on paper. Above the scene a text in black ink, all surrounded by gold flakes in different hues. Japan, Edo period, 19th century. Framed.

Painting: H 12 ½ x W 35 ½ in. Frame: H 17 ¼ x W 44 ¾ in.

Minimally yellowed, few wrinkles, some of the green slightly rubbed, black ink slightly smeared on right side, paper laid down with tape along the edges, all in all very good condition.

Hanging scroll with the image of a withered skull lying between flowering Suzuki grass. Nozarashi skull (exposed in an open field) in the fall. Black ink, brown and some gold and silver on silk. Dated and signed: 1915, Unrei and artist’s seal. Japan. Borders decorated with brocade skulls and Suzuki grasses.

Painting: H 51 ½ x W 20 ¼ inches. Total height 79 ¼ inches.

Good condition.

Akamatsu Unrei (1892-1958), Osaka. Studied painting with Unsen Koyama, Tikugai Fujii and Himejima Chikugai.

Slight rubbing of gofun, all in all very good condition.

Hand scroll with twenty separate images of men and women entering in a contest of size of their respective genitals and of stamina. Referees are running around in colorful garments. The worn out men are getting drunk and giddy. Then comes the measuring and the women gloriously win. Black ink, mineral colors and gofun on silk. Unsigned. Japan, Meiji era, 19th century.

Scroll: H 8 ¼ x L ca. 231 inches. Each image: ca. 6 ½ x 9 ½ inches.

Hanging scroll. A circle on a black background, divided into ten sections around a white central circle that holds the character ‘shin’, meaning heart or soul. The ten sections represent the ten realms that are the ten possibilities of rebirth. On top the four realms of enlightened beings: Buddhas, Boshisattvas, arhats and pratyeka Buddhas. Underneath, the six realms (rokudo): Heavenly beings, humans, militant demons (ashura), animals, hungry ghosts and hell. Ink, mineral colors, gofun and gold on paper. Japan, Edo period, early 19th century.

Image: 29 ¼ x W 21 inches. Mounting: 44 ¼ x 26 ½ inches. Silver scroll ends decorated with cut out peonies on rocks mounted over a sentoku core.

Punch hole in bottom, stabilized by mounting, few small rubbed spots, dent in scroll end.

Hanging scroll. Five stages of decay of a noble woman, starting with a very young beauty, through the stages of married life, old age, death until nothing but bones are left. Usually, nine stages are shown, elaborating on the stages after death, called kusozu (pictures of the nine aspects). Ink, mineral colors and gofun on silk. Japan, Edo period, 19th century.

Hanging scroll with image of a tiger, seen on its back, sitting under a promontory with some vegetation. Black ink, mineral colors and some gofun on silk. Dated and signed: Keio year of the tiger, 1st day of spring, Kofuku or Takayoshi. Seals: Mitsui Kofuku and Shisei. Japan, Edo period, 1866.

Image H 40 ½ x W 14 ¼ inches. Total height 76 inches.

Mitsui Takayoshi (1808-1885), born in Kyoto, established the Mitsui financial imperium and founded Mitsui Bank. He was known for his calligraphy and painting. He was an avid collector of objects connected to the tea ceremony. Today, his collection, including his own paintings can be viewed in the Mitsui Memorial Museum in Tokyo.

The painting presented here was obviously painted to usher in the year of the tiger, 1866.

Framed painting of a warrior with a drawn sword, holding a severed head in his hand. On his back a flag with the image of a skull. Perhaps one of the heroes of the Taiheiki, such as Endo Giemon Masatada. But between Kuniyoshi and other Utagawa artists, several series of heroes were produced. Unsigned. The style of Utagawa Kuniyoshi or Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Black ink and colors on paper, mounted as a scroll, cut and framed. Japan, Edo period, 19th century.

Hanging scroll. Portrait of Minamoto no Tsunemoto, sitting on a tiger skin before his sword, dressed in a white garment over his armor. Ink, colors, gofun and gold sprinkle on silk. Dated mizunoe ne (1852), early summer. Signed Gyokurei Omoto and two seals.

Comes with fitted kiri-wood storage box inscribed, dated 1852 and signed Ono Gyokurei.

Minamoto no Tsunemoto (894-961) was an imperial prince who received the family name Minamoto. Founder of the family that brought forth Minamoto, Ashikaga and Tokugawa shogun. He was a fine poet, as well.

Ono Gyokurei (1807-1870) was active in the bakumatsu era (end of Edo period). Not in Roberts.

Hanging scroll showing Emma O sitting in Hell surrounded by oni and skeletons making merry. Emma O sits slightly off center with a sake dish in the hand. In front of him two oni are dancing. Surrounding them are innumerable skeletons playing shamisen, dancing, playing go, drinking tea, smoking a pipe and/or drinking. Above the image a long inscription. Black ink and some color on wet paper. Several seals; artist unidentified. The sake jar on the left seems to be inscribed by a date into the Meiji era. Japan, Meiji/Taisho era.
