Two caricaturesque masks in the iki ningyo life-like style. A man of lower social class with loose hair and his face making a grimace, his eyes turned to his left, as if he sees something scary or disgusting. The other an old woman, her sagging mouth open, her eyes focusing on something nearby that she does not particularly like. Wooden cores covered with gesso and paint, some fur and horsehair for each coiffure. Eyes inlaid in glass or crystal. Japan, Meiji era, 19th century.
H 6 ¼ and 6 ½ inches.
Excellent details up to eye lashes and the leathery skin of older people. Some chips and stains and chafes, loss to the old woman’s fur hair. All in all very good condition.
