Small square kogo, box for storing incense. Cover decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e and nashiji gold flakes with the Sanskrit or Siddham character ban, sitting on a lotus base, floating in a lotus pond. Ban stands for the Dainichi Nyorai. On a lotus base in the upper left corner, sits the character for life (sei) and on the upper right float two characters: woman (onna) and wood? (ki) between bird-like shapes. Inside nashiji gold flakes of different sizes. Pewter rims. Japan, Edo period, 18th century.

H 3/4 x W 2-1/2 x D 2-1/2 in.

Some deep chips on the edges of the cover, lacquer dried, some shallow dents on cover (lotus).

Old inventory number in red lacquer on pewter rims: 31.50.170.

Small box, probably for incense. Square format with rounded corners, flat cover with rounded edges. On the cover against a black lacquer background with some clouds of gold sprinkle, sits a bird on a flowering plum tree. The trunk of the tree and the clouds extend onto the lower part of the box. The plum blossoms in a vibrant red with details in gold. Inside and bottom of box in dense silver togidashi. Japan, late Edo period, 18/19th century.
L 3 5/8”, w 2 5/8”, h 1 1/16” (9.2 x 6.8 x 2.5 cm).
Former paper labels on inside and bottom of lower compartment. Few minor traces of usage, as to be expected.

Hair pin, or kanzashi. Lacquered tortoise-shell, decorated in sprinkled red, green and gold lacquer (hiramakie, takamakie), with a stylised wave pattern. The reverse with a diagonally divided pattern of square wells, in gold lacquer on a red ground. Signed Shinzan. Japan, 19th century.
Length 6 11/16 in. (17 cm), width of head 1 ¼ in. (3.2 cm).

Shallow box for storing a Japanese polished metal mirror. The rubbed and worn lid is decorated in high relief with a large stylized chrysanthemum crest (kiku mon), at its center a six-petaled melon blossom crest (mokkô mon or mutsu-uri mon) is placed. After 1603 this mon was used by two samurai families, the NAKAGAWA, who descended from FUJIWARA YOSHIKADO, and the HITOME family. The inside of the lid is lavishly decorated with seven kinds of flowering autumn grasses (nanakusa) growing by a woven fence. The design is executed in a variety of thicknesses and shades of gold lacquer hiramakie and takamakie on a background of densely sprinkled gold powders (nashiji). Japan, 18th century. Lower part of box of high quality black lacquer, the rims of gold lacquer (slightly worn). No damages or cracks to the body.

Rectangular tray, standing on four low feet, black lacquer with gold and black decoration over wooden base. The slightly raised rim sprinkled with gold powders and decorated with a geometrical design in black and gold lacquer over a red base. The central black lacquer panel decorated at one side with a Chinese sage fishing from a rocky promontory (possibly Taikobo). The rocks, a picturesque tree and the seated person are built up in relief and partly inlaid with cut gold foil (now mostly lost). Waves, reeds and bamboo are depicted in shades of gold lacquers, depth is indicated by gold powder clouds. The underside entirely covered with black lacquer and now oxidized silver powders. Japan, middle Edo period, early to mid 18th century. Length 11 ¾” (30 cm), width 5 ¾” (14.6 cm), height 1 ¼” (3.3 cm). Some dents and rubbing, no cracks or damages to the body.

The surface of tan lacquer dusted with gold powder, the straight sides covered with gold lacquer (partly rubbed). The interior of black lacquer sprinkled with gold powder, rims of deep red lacquer. Bottom lacquered black. Unsigned. Edo period, 19th century. Length 3 ¾” (9.5 cm), height 1 5/8” (4.1 cm), width 2 ½” (6.3cm). Slightly rubbed.

Lovely small box for carrying lunch. On a system of shelves that open to the front and the sides (‘hinges’ are in the back), five boxes and three trays are stacked. The frame box and two of the inside boxes a covered in a clear lacquer finish that shows the beautiful wood grain. Three boxes covered in red, ochre and black lacquer. The trays are decorated in gold lacquer over red; the bottoms in black lacquer. The vertical posts decorated with karakusa in painted gold lacquer. Handle on top in patinated brass. Height 7; width 7 ¾; deep 4 1/8 inches (17,5 x 19,7 x 10,5 cm). Japan, Meiji period. Some careful restorations (old breaks glued, lost part replaced) one shelf slightly warped as are the covers of the boxes and the trays, upper right shelve glued back to the frame, some splits at the seams of boxes, some of gold lacquer rubbed, but generally good condition. Comes with plain tomobako.
