Painting of the six-tusked elephant, the companion of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, being washed and scrubbed by two attendants underneath a tree. Samantabhadra is standing toward the left with two more attendants. Ink and colors on paper. Several seals in all margins, inscription on the upper right. Unidentified artist. China, Qing dynasty, 18th century
Painted area: 55 ¼ x 30 3/8 inches.
Several restored spots and cracks (backed with thin strips of paper), no mounting but the painting is laid down on thin Chinese or Japanese paper.

Hanging scroll in ink and some color on browned silk of a barefooted traveler on a country road drinking from a wine kettle. Next to him a basket full of red spotty fruits between leaves. The man is warmly dressed in fur, a sword strapped to his back, a gourd dangling from his sash. His cane on the ground. Signed in the upper left Yangzhi and two seals. One extra seal next to the signature. Yangzhi was active around 1700. China, Qing dynasty.
Painted area: ca. 46.1 x 23.5 inches (117 x 59.5 cm). Total length: 86 inches (218.5 cm).
Good condition, few stains.

Yangzhi worked around 1700 as one of the last painters of large religious wall paintings. He is known for portraits of daoists, buddhists, hermits, gods and ghosts.

Hanging scroll with the image of Buddha standing on a dragon fish, holding a iron bowl in his hands. Next to him a garuda deity folding his hands, while holding long ceremonial sword across his arms. The Buddha and the fish in the water, bird deity standing on low swirling clouds. Around the shoulders a red mantle with manji motive in silver with traces of gold. Also gold and silver on details of the sword. Brilliant colors on paper. China, 18th century. Possibly Korean. Mounted above the painting is a inscription, describing the subject and dating the piece to a cyclic year. Ivory scroll ends. China, possibly Korea, 18th century.
Painted area: 15 x 11 2/8 in. (38.6 x 29.1 cm). Colophone: 9 13/16 x 11 3/8 in. (25.2 x 29.3 cm). Total length of mounting: 78 3/8 in. (200.5 cm)
Missing areas along edges and in the painted area, backed. Over all good very condition.

Portrait of a man standing, dressed in a long and wide garment. The head covered with a dark cloth. On the left inscription, seal and date. On lower right red seal of Ren Xiong (Jen Hsiung). Black ink and colors on paper. Framed.
Inner mat dimensions: 8 ¼ x 11 ½ in. (21 x 29.7 cm); frame: 24 x 16 ½ in. (61.6 x 42.5 cm).
Good to very good condition.

Ren Xiong (1820-1864). He was one of the ‘Four Ren’. He is the father of Ren Yu (see stock # 10310).

Large, very expressive scroll painting of a luohan holding up the sacred jewel in his left hand and running. He looks up over his shoulder at a dragon in the sky that chases him and that stretches out its claws toward the jewel. On the upper right side the name of the luohan (not identified, although he should be handaka sonja) and two seals. Nice and bold brushstroke. Black ink and color on paper. Painted surface: h 54 ; w 29 3/8 inches. China, 18th century. Some old restored cracks, due to rolling, few missing areas restored. Very good condition.
