Large peach-shaped bowl decorated on in- and outside with blossoming peach-tree branches. On beige colored stoneware a thin layer of cream colored, opaque glaze has been applied, on which the bold design in overglaze blue, black, green, red, white and gold. On the outside in a white rectangular reserve the signature Kenzan. This piece is definitely in the style of Ogata Kenzan, but not by the hand of any of them. Japan, 20th century. H 4; w 12 inches. Tiny chip on inner rim, otherwise excellent condition.
Fine cylindrical tea bowl of beige-brown colored stoneware, covered with thin gray glaze with white drippings on the outside. Here and there the gray glaze is very thin, allowing the stoneware to shine through in a pinkish hue. Inside practically round shape, outside lightly faceted. Bottom outside left unglazed. Imprinted seal inside foot rim: Asahi. Japan 20th century. H 2 5/8; diam. 4 inches. Slight traces of usage, some very thin glaze cracks. Generally in good condition.
a) Vase in the shape of a double gourd. On a reddish-brown stoneware base patches of a dark brown glaze have been thinly applied, partly covered again by patches of greenish-yellow ash glaze. On the bottom imprinted seal: Momoyama or Tôzan. H 7 3/8 inches. Small firing crack on the lower bulb.
b) Vase in the shape of a mallet with a circular body and an elongated, square neck. Over a reddish-brown clay a typical brown glaze has been applied with irregular spots. In the bottom seal: Momoyama or Tôzan. Height 9 inches; diameter 4 ¾ inches. Mint condition.
Tôzan is either the name of a potters’s studio, or an artist’s name. The name Tôzan is found frequently among potters of the Bizen tradition, usually referring to the background of the family or studio, tracing it back into the Momoyama period.
Water dropper in the shape of a bamboo segment with three sprouting leaves. Typical appearance of Bizen ware. Length 2 ¾ inches, height 1 ¼ inches. Japan, 1950-60s. Excellent condition.
Serving plate. Over a grayish brown stoneware a geometrical design in blue, brown and green glazes, partly with fine crackle. Unsigned, but clay, color and design remind one of Mashiko ware. Diameter 10 ¼ inches, height 2 inches. Japan, 2nd half 20th century. Slight traces of usage (tiny scratches and water stains), otherwise very good condition.
Koro of cylindracal shape, standing on three short, triangular feet. On whitish, rather porous clay that turned orange-brown at the feet due to heat exposure, a white glaze has been applied with a fine crackle. Inside left unglazed. Ofuke ware (kilns in Nagoya region), 20th century.
Height 3 1/8 inches, diameter 3 ¼ inches.
One very small, older chip at outer rim, one tiny firing crack in the body, otherwise very good condition.
Very simple box made of sugi-wood, corners and seams fortified with copper strips. Inside, behind a slide there is a pile of three boxes, the top most with a cover. On the top company? name burned into wood: Maefune. H 9 ½; W 6; D 10 inches (24,1 x 15,1 x 25,5 cm). Japan, early 20th century. Traces of usage, some warping, few tears in wood, generally good condition.
This piece was probably used by a craftsman.
Image of Fudo Myoo standing in the clouds with his sword in his right, the rope in his left hand. Mandala of red flames behind him. Inscribed: Copied from…. ; two red seals. Slip of paper on the back with red seal: Black ink and colors and gold on silk, mounted in green brocade with copper, engraved scroll ends. Inscribed on the back of the mounting, probably referring to a remounting: Date Taisho 14 or 1925, name of owner? (Narita yamanushi).
Painted area 46 5/8 x 16 1/8 inches (119.6 x 41.3 cm).
Painting somewhat soiled and browned, some small dark spots, mainly in background, slightly creased. Mounting with short tear (approx. 1 inch) in edge, weak spots at scrolls fortified with tape, otherwise in good hanging condition. Painting all in all in good condition. Comes with original wooden box, which is dated and inscribed with the name of original painter.
Five small dishes with a design of three iron-brown cherry blossoms (two positive, one negative) on a cream colored patch in an otherwise black surface. Foot ring impressed at tree points, thus creating three feet. Black Oribe. In the unglazed bottom two impressed seals: Aoi no kama (hollyhock kiln) and star-shaped flower.
Japan, Meiji/Taisho period.
Diam. 4 3/8 in. (11.4 cm), height 7/8 in. (2.1 cm). Excellent condition.
With yellow cloth wrappers and wooden box, inscribed: Kuro Oribe mei? no sara (Black Oribe signed? dishes). Signed and sealed on inside of cover.
Small bag for transporting an conch (hora) shell. Finely knotted silk threads, made into a shippo design. A thicker and a thinner cord are used for keeping the upper side shut and for strapping the bag to the back. The mouth piece of the shell would protrude through the small opening, while the natural opening of the shell will be caught within the large opening of the bag. Golden yellow silk. Japan, first half 20th century.
Length of bag 12 in. (31 cm).
Some of the threads broken at the upper edge, where the thinner cord is woven into the bag, and at the bottom, where the thicker cord is attached to the bag and at other stress points. Slightly soiled.
Vase of mallet shape with slightly concave sides, short cylindrical neck with minimally everting rim. Gray stone ware that at places turned brown through firing. White glaze running down, slightly thicker at bottom half of vase, some blue patches at the rim. Studio pottery. Japan, 20th century. H 7 1/8 in., diameter at foot 3 1/2 in.
Three small paintings in tanzaku format, painted for the New Year. Dragon in thunder clouds. Black ink and some red color on paper with golden background. Reverse of tanzaku speckled with gold flakes. Bamboo stalk. Black ink and brown color on paper with silver background. Reverse of tanzaku speckled with gold flakes. Torii in the snow with birds. Black ink on extremely thin sheet of wood. All signed and sealed, by different artists, or rather amateur painters. All dated on the back in pencil: 4 Jan 57.

Dragon: upper edge with some creases, corners slightly dented. Bamboo: Silver somewhat oxidized, corners slightly dented. Torii: Good condition.
Cookie mold with two-sided use. On one side three gourds. On the other side four molds for cakes with the text daishi (great master). Japan, Taisho period.

Empty zushi (shrine) of a very simple mokko shape, made of gilded metal. The outside in dull gilding, the inside shiny, orange-tinged gold. The upper draping (plastic) with two phoenixes and a jewel in the clouds, the base on the bottom decorated with a plant design. The bottom outside lined with green felt. Japan, early Showa period, ca. 1930s.
Height 7 3/4 inches.
Outside all around with corrosion spots, inside of doors with traces of weathering (left stronger than right side). Patina.
Decorated with a sprig of flowering chrysanthemum on the glossy red ground in shades of gold and silver lacquer (hiramakie, takamakie) and inlaid with tiny pieces of blue-green shell (aogai), the reverse decorated with two butterflies in gold lacquer. Unsigned. Comes with kiribako.

Obi (sash) with design on both sides. One side taupe colored silk embroidered in brown, murasaki, pink, green and blue with a design of bamboo leaves and matsukawabishi. The other side decorated in silver and some colored silk on murasaki colored silk with an intricate design of a river bank with stone barricades, containers and vegetation: bamboo, pine, chrysanthemums and momiji. The end of the obi marked with two strokes of gold thread. Japan, early Showa period.

Two water stains on the taupe side of the obi. The gold threads that mark the end of theobi coming loose. Few silver threads coming looses. Generally good condition.
Silk kimono decorated in yuzen technique with design of flowering stalks. Bamboo, cherry blossom and marigold. On the stalks small beetles crawl up. Outlines of flowers in silver. Inside partly lined with red silk. Japan, Showa period, mid 20th century.

Few light stains, one torn seam at sleeve (ca. 2 in.), one small moth hole in seam of other sleeve, otherwise good condition.
Excellent writing box, or suzuribako, in high gloss black lacquer, decorated with inlay of thin strips and thin pieces of mother-of-pearl. On the cover a heron is fishing on one leg between flowering iris and water lilies. On the inside of the cover more iris and a butterfly. The inside of the lower section decorated on the outside with carnation. On the inside flowering water lilies and iris. The water dropper in bronze with copper colored patina, in the shape of a carp. Rims of lower part and of cover mounted in silver. Bottom of lower segment signed (signature inlaid in mother-of-pearl and seal mother-of-pearl inlaid into red lacquer: Gazan saku; Gazan. Japan, Taisho period. Ink stick and two brushes (contemporary) included.
Comes with its original tomobako, signed and sealed on inside of cover: Kimura Gazan saku, red seal: Gazan. Inscribed on the outside in black ink: Gosuzuribako and moriwaka/tojaku (?) moyo raden (design inlaid in mother-of-pearl).
