Helmet ornament, or kabuto maedate, as worn by samurai. A golden jewel surrounded by a flaming mandorla. The central jewel made of gilded paper imitating leather, framed by a wooden outline, mounted onto a copper plate in the shape of a flaming mandorla. Buddhist symbol. Japan, early 20th century.

Kabuto maedate helmet ornament in the shape of the head of a horned demon. Thin sheet of cast iron, relief work. The demon’s eyes, pointy ears and fangs gilded, some black lacquer in the eye balls. On reverse a bridge and ‘female’ hardware for mounting onto the helmet. Japan, Meiji era, early 20th century, 1910s.

Some corrosion, gilding partially rubbed off. Left horn slightly warped.

This refers to a classic Chinese poem, likening the reflection of the moon on the water with a rabbit jumping over waves. Made of two sections, joined together before covering with brown glaze. Long handscroll depicting ‘Along the River During the Qingming Festival’ (Qīngmíng Shanghe Tu), following the scenes as seen in the handscroll with the same title by the Song painter Zhang Zeduan, housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing. One of the many re-interpretive paintings, in a totally different style than the original. People and daily life in Bianjing (today Kaifeng). Black ink and some light color on silk. Unidentified artist, China, mid 20th century. Date refers to 1933. Spurious signature and seals Molin Shanren added.

L 23 feet, H 11 inches.

Pinholes at regular intervals in the brocade border, some yellowing due to light exposure, 2 minor creases, otherwise very good condition.

Bronze cylindrical handwarmer (shuro or te-abure) with decoration of gourds plastically dangling from a band of low relief leaves and vines. The spokes in the shoulder and cover also in the shape of gourds. The flat part of the cover with fretwork in the shape of leaves and engraved vines. Playful combination of brown and yellow bronze. The handles wrapped in soft leather. Japan, Taisho/Showa eras, 1920s-1930s.
Comes with the original fitted tomobako signed and with inscription on the outside of the cover:
Nakagawa Joeki tsukuru and seal Joeki; Bronze handwarmer with [design of] gourds and vines …

Few scuffs consistent with usage, leather a bit dry and brittle.

Relatively high, straight sides with a constriction under the edge, decorated with the typical green glaze patches and geometrical patterns and plant motives in iron brown on white slip. Bottom inside left unglazed. Impressed seal in bottom, in the shape of a flying plover. Seto ware, Oribe style, Japan, Taisho period or early Showa, 1920s-1930s.
