Small chaire, powder tea container used in the tea ceremony during the colder months. Grey stoneware, typical for the Seto region, covered in a beautiful brown mottled, partially iridescent glaze. Unsigned. Re-purposed stopper from a blue and white porcelain Chinese tea container. Seto ware, Japan, early-mid Showa era, 1930s-1940s.

Stoneware water jar or mizusashi as used in the tea ceremony with round bottom developing into a diamond shaped edge. Greyish smooth stoneware, decorated with horizontal grooves, covered with brown iridescent glaze on the outside and with a mottled greenish-yellow glaze on the inside, dripping over the outside edge and down. Black lacquered, diamond-shaped coved. Takatori style, Japan, early Showa era, circa 1930-1950s.

H without cover 5¾ in.; with cover 6½ in.

Jar in fine condition, cover with 2 chips.

Traces of usage: two cracks in the cover, some chips in the cover and two tiny chips on the edge of the lower part, consistent with usage and the softness of the material. Otherwise good condition, charming piece.

Fine cylindrical tea bowl of beige-brown colored stoneware, covered with thin gray glaze with white drippings on the outside. Here and there the gray glaze is very thin, allowing the stoneware to shine through in a pinkish hue. Inside practically round shape, outside lightly faceted. Bottom outside left unglazed. Imprinted seal inside foot rim: Asahi. Japan 20th century. H 2 5/8; diam. 4 inches. Slight traces of usage, some very thin glaze cracks. Generally in good condition.
