Oval vessel standing on four pillar feet with a straight edge, as used for wide ikebana flower arrangements. Grayish earthenware with brown teadust glaze, with shimmering and dark brown swirls in the lighter brown. Relief stamped mark in the middle of the bottom and potter’s mark towards the edge of the bottom. Japan, perhaps Kyushu, Showa era, 1960-1980s.

H 3 x L 11 x D 8 inches.

Several small chips on the outer rims, standing edge on the inside lovingly repaired and retouched.

Cast iron vase in the shape of a tall and slender pail with irregular upper edge and moveable handle in the shape of a clipped branch. Front and back decorated under the edge with cast in stylized chrysanthemums (kiku) and paulownia (kiri), both of which can be interpreted as Imperial emblems, but also as imperial (kiku) and shogunal (kiri), depending on the context. Unmarked, Japan, probably Taisho era, 1920s.

H without handle 7¾ in; with handle ca. 9 in.

Corrosion on bottom on inside, otherwise fine condition.

Bronze ikebana vessel in the shape of a boat with a large anchor on the stern deck. On the flanks waves are indicated in gold damascene. Japan, Edo period, 19th century.

L 12 ¼ x W 7 3/8 x H 4 ¾ inches.

Beautiful dark brown patina, scuff marks on the bottom consistent with usage, water traces consistent with usage.

Hanaike, or vase for hanging at wall in tea room, of coarse light brown stone ware, pale translucent glaze. With dark bronze metal hanging-ring and matching wall hook. Lower part unglazed, inside and sides covered with almost transparent glaze. Unglazed clay visible near bottom, where two fingers and thumb held the object while dipping it into the glaze. With square seal imprint (unread). Japan, around 1985.
Height 3 5/8 in. (9.4 cm), diameter 3 in. (7.8 cm).

Short mallet shaped ceramic vase with square shoulder and somewhat everted mouth. The body with irregularly placed indentations, thinly covered with reddish-brown glaze over the dark brown stoneware, cream colored glaze on the neck and down to the shoulder, with fine crackle. Japan, Edo period, ca. 1800.
Small old chips at rim, larger chip at foot, hardly visible due to indentations, from which run two very thin cracks.

a) Vase in the shape of a double gourd. On a reddish-brown stoneware base patches of a dark brown glaze have been thinly applied, partly covered again by patches of greenish-yellow ash glaze. On the bottom imprinted seal: Momoyama or Tôzan. H 7 3/8 inches. Small firing crack on the lower bulb. b) Vase in the shape of a mallet with a circular body and an elongated, square neck. Over a reddish-brown clay a typical brown glaze has been applied with irregular spots. In the bottom seal: Momoyama or Tôzan. Height 9 inches; diameter 4 ¾ inches. Mint condition.

Tôzan is either the name of a potters’s studio, or an artist’s name. The name Tôzan is found frequently among potters of the Bizen tradition, usually referring to the background of the family or studio, tracing it back into the Momoyama period.
