Small shrine, or zushi, with the image of Benten, sitting on a lotus seat, holding a jewel in her left hand, a (now missing) sword in her right hand. On her head a crown in the shape of a torii. Seated on her head is also snake bodied Ugajin. Behind her head a halo with jewels.
Height 9 ¼ inches (23.7 cm).
Case with clear traces of usage, gilding on the hard ware rubbed off, gold on inside showing rubbing. Pigments on the figure and base slightly chipping, sword missing, otherwise very good condition.

Tall vase with four loops on shoulder. Middle brown dense stoneware irregularly covered with olive green glaze. The clay shows similaries with the brown, dense clay of Shigaraki ware, but there are no inclusions. Also the green glaze can he found in Shigaraki ware. This, however, may be from a completely different area. Japan, 19th century or earlier. Height 11 5/8 inches (29.9 cm).
Star crack at neck, one loop damaged, few old chips at upper rim, some scratches and irregularities in glaze and clay.

Sturdy bottle with ribbed surface. Light brown stoneware covered with brown glaze. Over the brown glaze a dripping pattern of yellow glaze. Large drippings at bottom cut off, showing the many inclusions in the glaze from the bottom of the kiln. Probably from northern Kyushu. Edo period, 19th century or earlier.
Height 9 1/8 in. (24 cm), diameter at bottom 6 in. (15.4 cm).
Glaze dull in the middle section of the bottle, due to heavy use, otherwise excellent condition.

Sculpture of Gyochu Kishimojin, standing on a lotus base, on top of a rock base, the hands folded in prayer. Finely carved wood with fine gold kirikane on the garment, gold on the lotus base. Eyes crystal. Rock base polychrome wood with some gold. Inscription on the back if the garment in black ink. Inscription on the back of the base and on the bottom of the base. Date on base: Horeki 8 (1758).
Height: 14 5/8 inches (37.5 cm).
Colors on the base soiled and somewhat rubbed, kirikane decoration rubbed at places, on top of head crack along joint in wood blocks, otherwise very good condition.

Pair of foxes, the guardian figures for a kitchen. One holding a jewel in the mouth, both wearing a jewel on top of their heads, meaning abundance and wealth. On their chests a flaming jewel has been painted. Under the soot the bright colors white and red are visible. They were messengers of the goddess of rice, Inari. The figures are made in two halves (front and back), a sheet of clay being pressed into a concave mold. Joining the two halves results in a hollow figure. After firing, the pottery was covered with gesso, over which bright colors were painted. Japan, late Edo period. Mingei.
Measurements: 12 ¼ x 6 ½ x 3 5/8 inches and 12 x 7 ½ x 3 ¾ inches.
Pottery covered in soot, partly rubbed off, left ear of the white deer broken and glued, base to the red deer broken and glued.
