Small round box in the shape a ribbed fruit, the stem standing up from the cover. Wood with black lacquer and gold. Inside covered with gold foil. Probably used on a Buddhist altar to keep incense. Japan, 19th century.
Height: 2 1/8 in. (6.7 cm), diameter at widest point: 3 1/8 in. (7.9 cm).
Clear traces of usage: dents, tiny chips, gold rubbed off at places, basically good condition with nice patina.

Large size horse eye plate. The grayish white stoneware covered in yellowish white glaze with fine crackle. The edge and a design of seven horse eyes painted in iron brown underglaze. The eyes unusually round, more referring to the snake eyes (janome). Seto ware, Edo period, early 19th century
Diameter: 13 ¾ inches (35 cm); height: 2 ½ inches (6.5 cm).
Some chips on the outer rim and two old thin cracks.
Horse eye plates usually have ovoid concentric circles painted on them. The eyes on the piece here have a more rounded shape. These type of plates were common house hold plates. Damage is usual.

Incense box, or kogo, in the shape of a rabbit, in hunched position, its ears flat on its flanks. The image is very abstract, with mere indication of the toes on the bottom segment. Grayish brown stoneware with thinly applied gray glaze with blue spots, letting the stoneware shine through at places. In bottom a character has been engraved, by way of a signature, unfortunately illegible. Japan, 2nd half 20th century.
Height: 1 ¾ inches (4.5 cm). Length: 2 ¼ inches (5.5 cm).
Excellent condition.

Small shrine. Inside sits Nichiren, founder of the Buddhist Nichiren sect, on a chair. Underneath the chair his clunky shoes. In his left hand he formerly held a rosary. In the right hand, pressed against his chest, he holds a four pronged vajra, now partly missing. In the back of him the gilded Amrita bottle. Figure of wood, stained black. Chair lacquered wood, partly polychrome design. Japan, Edo period.
Height 5 ¾ in. (14.6 cm).
Case with old chips, filled up with black lacquer, front third of bottom cracked off and repaired. Tiny chip at garment of Nichiren, lower part of vajra missing, as is the rosary, chair formerly broken and lovingly restored. Obviously used, but with love for the piece.

Small shrine with the image of Amida Buddha, standing on a lotus base with one hand up and one hand down in mudra in front of a tall mandala. Gilt wood figure and base, mandala made of gilt metal. On top eyelet to hang the zushi from. Japan, 19th century.
Height 7 ¾ in. (20 cm).
Case with clear traces of usage, very thin, short crack in left door, metal bolt missing from lock. Figure in good condition, lots of soot.

Very refined zushi with the sculpture of the bodhisattva Jizo. He stands on a lotus throne on rocks, holding a jewel in his left hand, his right hand missing. Behind his head a halo with very fine decoration in relief of clouds and jewels. Light wood with polychrome and gorgeous gold decoration, especially on the garment. Japan, Edo period, 19th century.
Height 6 in. (15.3 cm).
Right hand missing, otherwise excellent condition. Case: some dents and chips, basically in very good condition.

Small shrine with the sculpture of Kishimojin, the hands folded in prayer. Plain wood with nice patina, the pupils painted black. On the back inscription in black ink. On the right door of the case inscription in black ink: Angyo Kishimosonjin, the name of the temple and the donor. The inscription on the back of the sculpture is partly the same, indicating that sculpture and case came together. Japan, early 19th century.
Height case: 7 in. (17.9 cm).
Case with some obvious traces of usage, hardware slightly bent, nails missing. Sculpture in excellent condition.

Small shrine with the sculpture of Fudo Myoo, standing on a rock before a flaming mandala in the shape of a phoenix. Finely carved wood with fine gold decoration. In the right hand the rope, in the left a now missing sword. Mandala made of thin metal painted red with traces of gold. On the doors left and right are painted the images of Seitaka doji and Kongara doji. Japan, early 19th century.
Height 6 in. (15.6 cm).
Sword and ornament on the center of the base missing. Tiny paint flakes at right door painting. Case: some dents and old lacquer chips. Roof repaired with pegs, otherwise good condition.

Small framed painting of hawk perching on a rock underneath a flowering plum tree branch. The hawk beholds the beholder with one eye, holding its head and body at an angle. Unsigned. Kano style. Black ink on paper in brocade mounting. 18th century. Scroll ends cut off and framed.
Frame: 40 ¼ x 15 ¾ in. (105.8 x 40.2 cm). Painted area: 30 5/8 x 11 ½ in. (78.5 x 29.4 cm).
Toned, some cracks (former folds due to rolling), slightly rubbed at places, few missing areas. It is what it is. Still nice bold hand.

Case with clear traces of usage, gilding on the hard ware rubbed off, gold on inside showing rubbing. Pigments on the figure and base slightly chipping, sword missing, otherwise very good condition.

Tall vase with four loops on shoulder. Middle brown dense stoneware irregularly covered with olive green glaze. The clay shows similaries with the brown, dense clay of Shigaraki ware, but there are no inclusions. Also the green glaze can he found in Shigaraki ware. This, however, may be from a completely different area. Japan, 19th century or earlier. Height 11 5/8 inches (29.9 cm).
Star crack at neck, one loop damaged, few old chips at upper rim, some scratches and irregularities in glaze and clay.

Sturdy bottle with ribbed surface. Light brown stoneware covered with brown glaze. Over the brown glaze a dripping pattern of yellow glaze. Large drippings at bottom cut off, showing the many inclusions in the glaze from the bottom of the kiln. Probably from northern Kyushu. Edo period, 19th century or earlier.
Height 9 1/8 in. (24 cm), diameter at bottom 6 in. (15.4 cm).
Glaze dull in the middle section of the bottle, due to heavy use, otherwise excellent condition.

Image of a heron in water in rice-paste-resist dying technique (tsutsugaki) on cotton. The color showing are coffee brown for the background and different shades of brown with white for the heron. The image mounted as a hanging scroll, which has been cut to fit into a frame. Meiji period, late 19th century. Mingei.

Painted area: 44 ½ x 17 3/16 inches. Overall length 74 ¾ inches.
Several horizontal creases, several missing and thin areas in paper filled and partly retouched, especially in upper and lower parts. Mounting of later date in fragile state. In hanging order. Wooden scroll ends.

Sculpture of Gyochu Kishimojin, standing on a lotus base, on top of a rock base, the hands folded in prayer. Finely carved wood with fine gold kirikane on the garment, gold on the lotus base. Eyes crystal. Rock base polychrome wood with some gold. Inscription on the back of the garment in black ink. Inscription on the back of the base and on the bottom of the base. Date on base: Horeki 8 (1758).
Height: 14 5/8 inches (37.5 cm).
Colors on the base soiled and somewhat rubbed, kirikane decoration rubbed at places, on top of head crack along joint in wood blocks, otherwise very good condition.

Pair of foxes, the guardian figures for a kitchen. One holding a jewel in the mouth, both wearing a jewel on top of their heads, meaning abundance and wealth. On their chests a flaming jewel has been painted. Under the soot the bright colors white and red are visible. They were messengers of the goddess of rice, Inari. The figures are made in two halves (front and back), a sheet of clay being pressed into a concave mold. Joining the two halves results in a hollow figure. After firing, the pottery was covered with gesso, over which bright colors were painted. Japan, late Edo period. Mingei.
Measurements: 12 ¼ x 6 ½ x 3 5/8 inches and 12 x 7 ½ x 3 ¾ inches.
Pottery covered in soot, partly rubbed off, left ear of the white deer broken and glued, base to the red deer broken and glued.
