Small square box with a slide, used for carrying food. Through two cut out circles in the sides the small boxes on the inside become visible. Inside there are a larger box with cover, one smaller of the same height, but of half the length and two more that are half the size of the smaller box, one of which has a cover. The outer and inner boxes of wood with lacquer finish, all insides in black lacquer. Poem written in black ink on the slide. Brass (sentoku) handle. H 5 5/8; L 7 3/8; D 4 inches (14,4 x 18,9 x 10,4 cm). Japan, Meiji period. Cover of the larger box somewhat warped, some minor traces of usage (cracks in black lacquer on wood seams, some lacquer and finish rubbed off).

Bowl of high fired, porcelain-like, slightly yellow clay, glazed with a light celadon with fine crackle. Celadon ware was produced in a few Imari kilns, however, there is no certain attribution to this region. Diameter 5 ½ inches, height 2 1/8 inches. Japan, 19th century. Traces of usage on the inside (tiny frittings along the lines of the crackle), two tiny chips at upper rim, from one of which originates a short haircrack. Otherwise good condition.

Koro of cylindracal shape, standing on three short, triangular feet. On whitish, rather porous clay that turned orange-brown at the feet due to heat exposure, a white glaze has been applied with a fine crackle. Inside left unglazed. Ofuke ware (kilns in Nagoya region), 20th century.
Height 3 1/8 inches, diameter 3 ¼ inches.
One very small, older chip at outer rim, one tiny firing crack in the body, otherwise very good condition.

Serving plate. Over a grayish brown stoneware a geometrical design in blue, brown and green glazes, partly with fine crackle. Unsigned, but clay, color and design remind one of Mashiko ware. Well pulley. Wooden wheel with forged iron hanging construction. The inside of groove in the wheel, where the rope would run through, lined with a thin layer of copper. Diameter wheel 12 ¼ inches, height of whole 16 ¾ inches, thickness wheel 3, thickness whole 6 ½ inches. Beautiful patina of the keyaki wood, some dents and scratches due to usage, copper on wheel slightly damage due to usage, otherwise very good condition. Japan, 19th century

Circular bent-wood lunchbox, consisting of one tray and three layers of four fan-shaped covered boxes for food. The center of the box is left free, and can hold a flask of sake. On the side forged iron handles with square holes, so that the box can be carried from a pole. Wood covered with brown clear lacquer. Height 8 ¾ inches, diameter 11 ½ inches. Beautiful patina, obvious traces of usage, crack in cover, two cracks in bottom, some wormage in cover, bottom reinforced with two pieces of wood later on and outside Japan. Japan, 19th century.

Very small cloisonné vase of globular shape, decorated with a rose in full flower and a budding rose. The image is surrounded by clear red enamel (pigeon blood) on an underlying ground of silver foil in which bamboo leaves in low relief are showing. This technique is called ginbari. Foot and upper edge silver, cloisons in silver or silvered copper. Foot ring marked 'silver'. Although no further marks are present, both the design on the underlying silver foil and roses are typical for the Sato manufacture. Japan, 20th century.
Height 2½ inches.
Excellent condition with nice flow of colors.

Rather small ovoid jar with high, rounded shoulder and an upright neck with slightly everted rim. The light brown opaque glaze shows some luster and has small white spots there where the bubbles in the glaze burst. On the body a spot of greenish transparent glaze, from the rim all the way down to the foot with fine crackle. Flat bottom on outside with several white inclusions. Japan, Shigaraki ware, 19th century. Height 7 inches, diameter 5 3/8 inches. Very thin glaze crack at neck, some minimal traces of usage. Otherwise very good condition. This kind of jars was used for storage, in particular storage of tea leaves.

Sturdy storage jar with brown glaze and yellow spot of ash glaze over the brown ribbed body of stone ware. Sloping shoulder with very short neck. Dense clay with small inclusions that reminds of Tamba ware or Shigaraki. Height 7 ½ inches, width 6 inches at the neck. Japan, Bizen, 19th century. Glaze partly rubbed off at upper edge and at the body where the oiece is held, otherwise very good condition.

Compact figure of seated Daruma wrapped in his garment, his hands and face exposed. Joined wooden segments (yosegi saiku) with traces of black lacquer on the garment and headdress. Part of the headdress covered with red lacquer. Hands and face covered in brown lacquer. Eyes in glass or crystal. His right hand must have a whisk, now missing. Japan 19th century. Generally good condition. Some lacquer chipped off the hands (see pictures), black lacquer worn, red lacquer slightly worn; some very thin lacquer cracks along the seams of the underlying segments. Height 16½ inches. Hands stuck in which is usual in this technique.

Short mallet shaped ceramic vase with square shoulder and somewhat everted mouth. The body with irregularly placed indentations, thinly covered with reddish-brown glaze over the dark brown stoneware, cream colored glaze on the neck and down to the shoulder, with fine crackle. Japan, Edo period, ca. 1800.
Small old chips at rim, larger chip at foot, hardly visible due to indentations, from which run two very thin cracks.

a) Vase in the shape of a double gourd. On a reddish-brown stoneware base patches of a dark brown glaze have been thinly applied, partly covered again by patches of greenish-yellow ash glaze. On the bottom imprinted seal: Momoyama or Tôzan. H 7 3/8 inches. Small firing crack on the lower bulb. b) Vase in the shape of a mallet with a circular body and an elongated, square neck. Over a reddish-brown clay a typical brown glaze has been applied with irregular spots. In the bottom seal: Momoyama or Tôzan. Height 9 inches; diameter 4 ¾ inches. Mint condition.

Tôzan is either the name of a potters’s studio, or an artist’s name. The name Tôzan is found frequently among potters of the Bizen tradition, usually referring to the background of the family or studio, tracing it back into the Momoyama period.

Small shrine, or zushi, with the figure of Kannon Nyoirin, sitting on a lotus base positioned on rocks. Carved in wood. The 6armed Kannon sits in position of royal ease, his head resting on his main right arms. In his other right hands he holds the wish-granting jewel (nyoi hoju) and a rosary. His main left hand rests on the lotus, while the others hold a script and a, now missing, lotus flower. He wears a crown and jewelry on his chest. Behind his head a halo. Height case 10 ½ inches. Some minor rubbing and lacquer chips, two tips of lotus petals broken and repaired, fringe of crown on right missing, few fingertips slightly chipped. Case: minor traces of usage. Overall condition very good.
