Almost square fukusa or ceremonial cloth. Silk decorated with a hand-painted (yuzen dye-technique) autumn landscape with waterfalls, overlaid by an opened fan – in woven brocade, hand-stitched colored silk and gold embroidery and painting techniques– decorated with the poet Kakinomoto Hitomaro on an engawa between scattered momiji leaves and ivy in autumnal colors. Reverse decorated with a tachibana crest in stencil-dye technique. Silk and gold-thread tassels. Japan, Meiji era, probably early 20th century.

H 28 x W 26 ¼ inches.

Some foxing and other stains, consistent with use and storage, otherwise very good condition.
