Stoneware bowl of conical shape, the sides slightly ribbed at the bottom, with a small spout to pour water from for making tea. A gray base glaze, decorated in red, green, white and brown enamels with a blossoming cherry tree and a maple tree with green and red leaves. Marked on bottom in overglaze brown bold characters: Inuyama. Japan, Edo/Meiji eras, 1830-1870s.

H ca. 3 ½ in., diam. Ca. 5 ¼ in.

Tiny old chip at foot, otherwise fine condition

Cf. Edward Morse, Catalog of the Morse Collection of Japanese Pottery, under Inuyama, where he dates this rather colorful type to 1830-1880.
