Elegant wooden lunch box, Japan, Meiji period

Square box with a slide, used for carrying food for a picnic. Through two cut out gourd-shapes in the sides the small boxes on the inside become visible. Inside there are two long boxes, one cubic box and two boxes of half the height, with cover and one top cover. The outer and inner boxes made of wood covered with a transparent lacquer finish, all insides in red lacquer, all bottoms in black lacquer. Forged iron handle. On top stamped mark: Kazumaru or Ichimaru. (H 10 5/8; L 10 3/8; D 5 ½ inches (26,8 x 26,4 x 13,7 cm). Japan, Meiji period. Top cover somewhat warped, some minor traces of usage (some lacquer and finish slightly rubbed, some scratches on surface of outer box), generally in very good condition.
