Two small, oval covered boxes made of bentwood (magemono), stitched at the overlap. Outer sides of the boxes and the covers brushed and covered with reddish brown lacquer, the insides and bottoms covered with black lacquer. Purple silk net bag. Japan, Meiji period/early 20th century.
Largest box H 1 1/8; L 4 ¾; W 3 inches (3,9 x 12 x 7,6 cm).
Some traces of usage at boxes and covers, some warping at the rounding which causes seams between bottom and side, otherwise good condition.
Bentwood was the predecessor of plastic in Japan. This kind of boxes was extensively used and was not meant to last.
