Rectangular tray, standing on four low feet, black lacquer with gold and black decoration over wooden base. The slightly raised rim sprinkled with gold powders and decorated with a geometrical design in black and gold lacquer over a red base. The central black lacquer panel decorated at one side with a Chinese sage fishing from a rocky promontory (possibly Taikobo). The rocks, a picturesque tree and the seated person are built up in relief and partly inlaid with cut gold foil (now mostly lost). Waves, reeds and bamboo are depicted in shades of gold lacquers, depth is indicated by gold powder clouds. The underside entirely covered with black lacquer and now oxidized silver powders. Japan, middle Edo period, early to mid 18th century. Length 11 ¾” (30 cm), width 5 ¾” (14.6 cm), height 1 ¼” (3.3 cm). Some dents and rubbing, no cracks or damages to the body.
