Shallow box for storing a Japanese polished metal mirror. The rubbed and worn lid is decorated in high relief with a large stylized chrysanthemum crest (kiku mon), at its center a six-petaled melon blossom crest (mokkô mon or mutsu-uri mon) is placed. After 1603 this mon was used by two samurai families, the NAKAGAWA, who descended from FUJIWARA YOSHIKADO, and the HITOME family. The inside of the lid is lavishly decorated with seven kinds of flowering autumn grasses (nanakusa) growing by a woven fence. The design is executed in a variety of thicknesses and shades of gold lacquer hiramakie and takamakie on a background of densely sprinkled gold powders (nashiji). Japan, 18th century. Lower part of box of high quality black lacquer, the rims of gold lacquer (slightly worn). No damages or cracks to the body.
This piece is located in Europe (EC). |
