Book: Julius Kurth, Sharaku, 1922

Book on Japanese woodblock prints: Kurth, Julius, Sharaku, Mit 83 schwarzen, 3 Farbentafeln, 7 Abbildungen im Text und einem Stadtplan [With 83 b/w illustrations, 3 color illustrations, 7 illustrations in the Text and a Map]. Zweite, Stark Bearbeitete Auflage [2nd, Revised Edition], Munchen, R. Piper & Co., Verlag, 1922. 215 pp., 3 color ills., 83 b/w ills., some drawings. 11 1/8 x 8 1/8 in. (28.5 x 21 cm). Hardboard, red cloth spine. German text. Upper part of some pages show faint water damage, one small tear to a page, otherwise good condition.
This is the second, “strongly revised” edition of a pioneering work published 12 years earlier by the author. The introductory text is highly opinionated and refreshingly free of inhibitions concerning the achievements and mental abilities of other authors writing on the subject of woodblock prints. Illustrations of “Works by Sharaku’s Predecessors” consist of 9 b/w plates, beginning with Torii II Kiyomasa, dated 1693, to Katsukawa Shunchô (pp. 129-140). Illustrations of “Sharaku’s Works” begin with photographs and drawings of the Tokushima castle in Awa, Shikoku. Shown are 70 b/w reproductions of Sharaku prints, plus 3 reproductions in color. The book includes an alphabetical list of the names of famous actor’s families in Edo (pp. 19-32). Appendices include: Sources (pp. 108-112); List of known works by Sharaku (pp. 113-127). An enlarged detail of a map of Yedo (Tokyo), dated 1832, is inscribed with numbers indicating the living quarters of woodblock print artists, publishers, and the address of the theaters (pp. 207-209). A table of family names of those actors’ depicted on Sharaku’s prints, as well as a facsimile of 64 of their family crests (mon), is found on pp. 211-213.

This book is located in Europe (EC).
