Albumen print, hand colored. Title: B 96 FARMER. Full length studio portrait of a farmer in straw cape. Over his shoulder he holds a hoe, from which dangles a bunch of daikon, and in the hand he carries a bucket or container. In his mouth a pipe. In the background mount Fuji is visible over a lake. White number in photo: 96. Artist: Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943). Photograph probably from mid 1880s. Mat.
Inner outline of mat: 10 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches (27.5 x 19.8 cm) (the actual photo is slightly larger, as it continues underneath mat). Minimal creasing, colors slightly faded. Hinged at upper margin on matboard (can be undone). Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943) was active in the 1880s through 1900. He was an assistant to Felix Beato until 1863.
