Albumen print, hand colored. Title: C 12. SPINNING. Studio portrait of a young woman sitting on a straw mat with a spinning wheel. To her right a small chest of drawers, to her right a screen. Artist: Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943). Photograph probably from mid 1880s. Mat and framed.
Inner outline of mat: 10 1/8 x 7 5/8 inches (25.7 x 19.3 cm) (the actual photo is slightly larger, as it continues underneath mat); frame: 20 ½ x 17 1/8 inches (52 x 43.5 cm). Small crease at upper left corner, some creasing in the area of the lower part of the paravent, colors minimally faded. Hinged at upper margin on matboard (can be undone). Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943) was active in the 1880s through 1900. He was an assistant to Felix Beato until 1863. He started his own studio in 1881 in Yokohama.
