Albumen print, hand colored. Title: E 52. FUJI FROM OTOMETOGE. In the foreground a man with a hores and a man with a chest on his back. To the left a man and a woman with child are resting at a tea stand. In the background the Fuji in full glory but in the haze. Artist: Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943). Photograph probably from mid 1880s. Mat and frame. Inner outline of mat: 7 7/8 x 10 3/8 inches (20.2 x 26.6 cm) (the actual photo is slightly larger, as it continues underneath mat). Frame: 18 1/4 x 20 1/8 in. (46.3 x 51.2 cm). Good condition. Hinged at upper edge matboard (can be undone). Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943) was active in the 1880s through 1900. He was an assistant to Felix Beato until 1863. He started his own studio in 1881 in Yokohama. Another, similar, composition from virtually the same spot is found in an album by Kusakawa Kimbei in the New York Public Library. It bears the title 'Fujiyama, from Otometoge' and is numbered 998 in white digits. Ex Prudential Art Program (label on back of frame) |
