Albumen print, hand colored. Title: A 564 THEATRE STREET AT YOKOHAMA. View of the street that leads to the theater. Left and right tall banners, a large crowd. In the background one can just see the facade of the theater. Artist: Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943). Photograph probably from mid 1880s. Mat and frame. Inner outline of mat: 7 7/8 x 10 5/8 inches (20.2 x 27.2 cm) (the actual photo is slightly larger, as it continues underneath mat). Frame: 18 1/4x 20 1/4 in. (46.4 x 51.6 cm). Some creases, otherwise good condition. Hinged at upper edge to matboard (can be undone). Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943) was active in the 1880s through 1900. He was an assistant to Felix Beato around 1861. He started his own studio in 1881 in Yokohama. He had a retail store in Ginza, Tokyo. Ex Prudential Art Program. |
