Shrine with a finely carved sculpture of the Bodhisattva Benten, sitting with crossed legs on a throne made of lotus leaves. She holds her two hands folded together in front of her face. In her hair there is a small shinto torii, her typical headdress. She sits in front of a disc shaped mandorla. Polychrome decorated (hair and mouth) wood with ornaments in gilded metal. Japan, 19th century. Height case: 8 1/4 inches (20.5 cm). Case: Traces of usage (lacquer partly cracked along seams, some small dents and some lacquer chips, especially along lower edge of reverse. Figure: Chip at tip of scarf on right, scarf broken in 2 spots and repaired, otherwise very good condition. |
