Small shrine with beautifully carved and decorated sculpture of the Buddha Shakyamuni, his hands folded in his lap. On his head he wears a cap in the shape of a lion (shishi), which is very unusual. He sits in front of a disc shaped mandorla, which is also rather unusual, on an eight tiered round lotus base. The lotus petals painted white and pink with gold, the garment decorated with manji motive and the shishi-hat decorated in gold and a little red. The crown in gilded metal. Above the curtain in laps blue with fine gold decoration of two phoenixes. Japan, later part 19th century. Height case: 9 7/8 in. (25.7 cm). Segment of crown missing, small tension crack in his left thigh, otherwise excellent condition. Case: Few dents, lacquer chipped off in one spot, otherwise very good condition. One of Shakyamuni's companion is the bodhisattva Monju, who has the lion as distinctive companion. The lion hat may refer to Monju bosatsu. The figure may also be identified as Dainichi Nyorai, who is imaged sometimes with a lion as a carrier component of the lotus base. |
