Scroll painting, descent of Amida, Japan, 17th century
$ 2,500

Japanese Buddhist scroll painting depicting the Welcoming Descent of the Amida Buddha from the Western Paradise to earth. He stands on lotus flowers on swirling white clouds. His red and black robe decorated in gold with tiny flowers and geometric motives. Middle section of a triptych. Originally he would have been flanked by the bodhisattvas Seishi and Kannon. Color and gold on silk, the outlines of the body delicately done in red paint. Mounting of later date. Scroll ends of gilt copper, decorated in nanako technique. Upper corners fortified with brass hard ware, decorated with a chrysanthemum each. Japan, 17th century.
Painted area: 31 3/4 x 14 3/4 in. (81.7 x 37.7 cm). Total length 63 in. (161.2 cm).
Several horizontal cracks. There are several missing areas, backed by darkened silk, which in reality does not catch the eye immediately. Generally good condition, consistent with age and usa. Beautiful mounting in very good condition.
