This is an antique 19th century silk cut velvet golden Brown ROBE. The design was produced taking the vertical warp threads on a loom were passed over wires to make rows of loops, then cut, to make raised design. The design is prunus blossoms, and bamboo foliage. There is a cut velvet design on the back of the neck on the collar of a roundel with Chinese character.
I believe this is a called a full length informal surcoat. It has a hidden pocket under the front flap, this pocket signifies the European contact, showing knowledge. It also had a tear on the outside that has been mended, the tear goes through the blue silk lining, looking like a knife or sword cut. Please look at the photographs.
It is in strong condition, the collar is separating, need stitching, there are a couple of very light water stains that I have pictured.
It has fabric Turkish knot buttons, with cord loops all intact. It has a beautiful sky blue silk lining.
It measures 68 inches across from cuff to cuff, the cuffs are folded, about 2 ½ inches wide. It is 52 inches in length.
