Cornelis Joppensz. by Oswald Wenckebach 1895-1962

Like the boy with his finger in the dike, this orphan is another dutch legend. When the spanish army besieged Leiden city in 1574 they fled from the the protestants(geuzen) or the approaching water. Not sure if they were gone this young boy went into the spanish encampment and made the legendary discovery of the pot with stew inside. This became the first meal for the hungry citizens of Leiden and is still celebrated on the third of October each year. The cooking pot was in the Schaeck-family for many centuries and can now be found in the museum "de Lakenhal". The origianal statue stands tall in the city of Leiden. This small 6.5" (16.5 cm.) bronze figure is only given from the Leiden councel to persons of great merit to the city of Leiden. This figure is dated 1978 and signed.
